San Luis de Pambil
San Luis de Pambil is a small town in Bolívar Province in the warm coastal lowlands of Ecuador, in the foothills of the Andes mountains. Not only the subtropical climate is perfect for outdoor activities all day long but also for agricultural conditions. Plantains, oranges, sugarcane, coffee and cacao (chocolate) are the most common products in this region. The small, laid back town San Luis is the main access point to the beautiful Piedra Blanca region. It is located in the province of Bolívar, quite in the centre of Ecuador. In the north of San Luis you can find the province of Cotopaxi, in the east the community Parroquia Facundo Vela and in the south and west the canton Las Naves. The main water resource is the Zapotal river which is also a nice swimming place.
The community of San Luis was formed in the beginnig of the sixties. Its name comes from the palm called Pambil which was very widespread in this period. The majority of the first inhabitants originally came from Guanujo and its surrounding areas. Today 35 % of the population is inidgenous and speaks Kichwua and Spanish. Its cuisine offers many specialities: green boulders with cheese and pork, fish rolls, rice with mixed vegetables and roasted meat.
The community of Piedra Blancaconsists of some 30 families scattered throughout a forested valley and is just a 40 mintes ride away from San Luis. The area was once all virgin rainforest, which was partly destroyed by the original settlers, around 50 years ago. Our ecotourism project intends to protect and conserve the forests around the Piedra Blanca.
